Hormones in Harmony: Integrative Approach to PCOS and Acne

Dr. Patricia “Trixie” Valle-Tin, recognized for her expertise in holistic dermatology, took the lead as a key opinion leader at the 48th Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Annual Convention, held from November 4–7 alongside the 12th Asian Scientific Meeting of Pediatric Dermatology (ASMPD). In her talk, she highlighted the complex interplay of hormones, lifestyle, and skin health, emphasizing that a truly holistic approach is essential in addressing PCOS and its symptoms, including acne.

Dr. Trix, a board-certified dermatologist and functional medicine practitioner with over 15 years of experience, brings a root-cause–focused and holistic approach to health and wellness. Her practice goes beyond managing symptoms, exploring the intricate connections that occur in hormonal imbalances and their impact on the skin. She specializes in PCOS, gut health, and dermatologic concerns, helping women address not only acne and other visible symptoms but also the underlying hormonal and metabolic factors. Driven by a desire to provide deeper, integrative care, she pursued further training and certifications in functional and integrative medicine, mentored by experts in hormone restoration, therapeutic food plans, mind-body medicine, and aging.

As one of the Co-Chairs of the Functional and Integrative Dermatology subcommittee of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Trix promotes evidence-based integrative practices, assesses root causes of dermatologic conditions, supports resident training, and advocates for women’s, maternal, and environmental health in dermatology.

Understanding PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent hormone, metabolic, and reproductive disorder affecting women. It is the leading cause of female infertility and a precursor for other conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and endometrial cancer. Despite its prevalence—estimated to affect 1 in 10 women of childbearing age—around 50% of women with PCOS remain undiagnosed. Studies show that half of women with PCOS may develop type 2 diabetes or prediabetes by age 40, and the condition also increases the risk for endometrial, ovarian, and breast cancer.

The symptoms of PCOS vary for each woman, which is why management should be customized based on each woman’s unique hormonal and metabolic profile.
